With the exception of the fact that you could upgrade previous WinMo phones up to the 5.0 to 6.0 from 6.0 to 6.1 to, well you get the idea. It was really based upon the manufacture. Certain manufactures didn't some did.
Don't forget that the Blackberry Storm also updates its firmware that patched and fixed the horrible screen that they had as well as allowing some newer features to be enabled.
Please also don't forget that Apple's strategy is and has always been three tiered. Each year a new model comes out for the Iphone and each year the oldest model gets dropped from support.
Honestly, I have been running my Iphone 3g jailbroken from almost day one. I have had every single feature (yes that includes multi-tasking). I can say that ALL of the Iphone os upgrades are nothing more than re-branded Jailbreak favorites.
So to fix your statement:
Apple is the ONLY phone maker that has provided SOME type of significant software updates, increasing the functionality of existing hardware PROVIDED THAT you buy the latest hardware.
