Tokyo-based company Toshiba unveiled the world’s first high definition liquid crystal display 3 D television which that does not require special glasses. So no need to wear glasses before watch 3d tv anymore. The two new 3D TVs in the Regza GL1 series, Regza 20GL1 and Regza 12GL1 were unveiled at the Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (Ceatec) in Tokyo.
                  
Most 3-D TVs on the market depends on glasses to rapidly deliver separate images to each eye, which creates a sense of three-dimensional depth.The system is similar to what’s used in Nintendo’s 3DS, the company’s highly anticipated handheld device that features glasses-free 3-D gaming.

Currently Toshiba will offer 3D tv’s in two sizes – 12 inches and 20 inches. Suggested viewing distance for the 20-inch model is 90 centimeters (35.4 inches) and 65 centimeters (25.6 inches) for the 12-inch size.

The TVs will go on sale in Japan in late December, Toshiba said. They smaller version will cost about 120,000 yen (912 pounds), and the larger one will be double the price 240,000 yen (1824 pounds).Right now, you can get a 50-inch Samsung 3DTV from Best Buy, with two pairs of glasses, for $990 (495 pounds). There’s just no comparison.

Technology – Toshiba uses a “perpendicular lenticular sheet,” which consists of an array of small lenses that directs light from the display to nine points in front of the TV. If a viewer is sitting within the optimal viewing zone, the brain integrates these points into a single 3-D image.

“The result is precise rendering of high quality 3-D images whatever the viewing angle within the viewing zone,” Toshiba said in its release.

But it also became outdated by the announcement of the latest 3D TV where users can enjoy 3D programmes without wearing glasses.

Japan based consumer electronics manufacturer Toshiba has announced the world´s first 3D Flat panel-TV without glasses. Toshiba has launched two 3D TVs with a screen size of 12 inch and 20 inch in Japan"s biggest consumer electronics show, CEATEC 2010.

Toshiba claimed that the new integral imaging system helps the users to experience 3D videos without wearing 3D glasses. The new Toshiba 3D TV uses a perpendicular lenticular sheet, an array of small lenses that directs light from the display to nine points in front of the set. If a viewer sits within the optimal viewing zone, the brain integrates these points into a single 3D image.

Toshiba also has plan to launch the 40-inch version of this 3D TV but the officials revealed that this project will take time. The suggested viewing distance for the 20-inch model is 90cm and 65cm for the 12-inch size.

3D is based on the way the human brain and eyes work. Because the pupils of a person’s eye are about 6.5 cm apart, each eye views a scene from a different angle and generates a unique image. The brain merges the images to create a single picture. The slight difference between the image from the right eye and the image from the left eye allows the brain to judge the depth. Stereoscopic vision is attained.

Our ability to see in 3D is about perceiving depth. How far away things are from us. A combination of several components allow our brains to perceive our 3D world around us. Perspective is one, where things further away appear smaller. But that can sometimes trick us. Close one eye and look around you. You will immediately notice that the distance of the things around you is not so obvious. If you hold up two things in front of you and move one closer and further away, you will only be able to judge which is closer by their relative sizes. Some optical illusions rely on this by having smaller than usual objects closer to you, so creating the illusion of them being further away.

Another aspect of depth perception is focus. Look at your hand outstretched with a distant background. You will see your hand in focus but the background out of focus.
                
The final component of depth perception is only available to us because we have two eyes. Because our eyes are spaced apart, each eye sees a slightly different view. Our brain combines these two slightly different scenes and gives us a sense of how far away things are. A simple way to demonstrate that to yourself is to hold one finger up at arms length. Then close each eye in turn, and notice the position of your finger compared to the distant background. With your right eye open, your finger will appear to have moved to the left relative to the background.
