LATEST MODELS OF IPHONE 4

Around a thousand people queued through the night outside Apple's flagship store on Regent Street to be among the first to get their hands on Apple's newest gadget, iPhone 4.

The first customers in that queue were Alex and Priscilla Lee, Canadians living in Dubai who were in London for a holiday. The siblings had been queuing since late on Tuesday evening to secure their place at the head of the line. Ben Paten, who had placed a pre-order for his iPhone 4 online, was the first of the reserve-and-collect customers to pick up their iPhone 4 from the Regent Street branch.

But Apple has warned customers that the white iPhone 4 will not be available for another month, because of a manufacturing glitch.

"White models of Apple's new iPhone 4 have proven more challenging to manufacture than expected," said the company in a statement. "As a result they will not be available until the second half of July. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected."

Network operators Tesco and Three have joined Vodafone, Orange and O2 in announcing upgrade prices and tariffs for iPhone 4. Tesco is offering the 16GB iPhone 4 for £19 on a two-year contract worth £45 per month. Users will get unlimited calls and texts, and a 1GB monthly data allowance. Three will be offering the 16GB iPhone for free on a £45 per month, two-year contract, with customers receiving 2,000 minutes of free calls, 5,000 free texts, 5,000 free call minutes to other Three users, and a 1GB monthly data allowance. Full details of the other contracts and tariffs available from rival network operators can be found in our ultimate price guide.

The iPhone 4 is a touchscreen smartphone developed by Apple. It is the fourth generation of iPhone, and successor to the iPhone 3GS. It is particularly marketed for video calling (marketed by Apple as FaceTime), consumption of media such as books and periodicals, movies, music, and games, and for general web and e-mail access. It was announced on June 7, 2010, at the WWDC 2010 held at the Moscone Center, San Francisco,[6] and was released on June 24, 2010, in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Japan.

The iPhone 4 runs Apple's iOS operating system, the same operating system as used on previous iPhones, the iPad, and the iPod Touch. It is primarily controlled by a user's fingertips on the multi-touch display, which is sensitive to fingertip contact.

The most noticeable difference between the iPhone 4 and its predecessors is the new design, which incorporates an uninsulated stainless steel frame that acts as the device's antenna. The internal components of the device are situated between two panels of chemically strengthened aluminosilicate glass.[7] It has an Apple A4 processor and 512 MB of eDRAM, twice that of its predecessor and four times that of the original iPhone. Its 3.5-inch (89 mm) LED backlit liquid crystal display with a 960×640 pixel resolution is marketed as the "Retina Display".

Consumer Reports has examined the new white iPhone 4, and has determined it is exactly the same size as the original black iPhone 4 model. Accordingly, both models are 0.37 inches in thickness. This news follows numerous reports indicating the white iPhone was noticeably thicker than its black counterpart.

As part of its thickness test, Consumer Reports used high-quality calipers at its Yonkers, New York lab. In doing so, it tested both the white and black iPhone models.

Apple’s Senior Vice President of Product Marketing Phil Schiller responded to this issue recently via Twitter.  He stated at the time that the white iPhone 4 “is not thicker, don’t believe all the junk that you read.”

It looks like Consumer Reports has confirmed Schiller’s assessment.

Meanwhile, Consumer Reports remains committed to not recommending the iPhone 4 to its customers, whether it be a black or white model.

iLounge has received its Verizon iPhone 4 for review purposes and is busy putting the revised handset through its paces, but there are several small differences between it and the GSM model that we’d like to share. Apple has notably removed all the markings below the text on the rear of the CDMA model, including the CE and FCC logos; the text itself has changed to reflect its new FCC ID of BCG-E2422A—GSM models carry an ID of BCG-E2380A or B. The ringer switch of the CDMA model has been shifted notably downwards to accomodate the fourth antenna divider, something that may cause incompatibilities with some cases, as may a tiny shift downwards in the placement of the volume buttons. Also, the front and back of the box have changed to reflect the revised antenna design and different networks, respectively; Apple has added a reference to the CDMA model’s hearing aid compatibility rating to the sticker on the rear, but includes no such reference on GSM models. We’re continuing to test the new handset, but for now, feel free to see our Verizon iPhone 4 Unboxing photoset on Flickr.
